Former process and risk engineer at GHD, and the technical lead on BHP’s Innovation Sustainability team. Commencing a Ph.D. sponsored by Canopy Blue, at The University of Western Australia, in engineering seaweed products to improve soil fertility and carbon inventory of arid lands.
A world leading seaweed ecologist and has studied the structure, function and change in kelp forests off WA for the last 20 years. His foundational work on kelp forests along the Great Southern Reef has greatly improved our understanding of the role of seaweed habitats in healthy and biodiverse coastal oceans, as well as the drivers and extent of recent losses due to climate change and other human pressures. Wernberg currently leads the international networks ‘Global Ecosystem Services Assessment from Kelp’ and ‘Green Gravel Action Group’.
An expert in kelp blue carbon and the flow of co-benefits and ecosystem services. She has led the most recent estimates of kelp carbon sequestration potential in Australia and is developing models of kelp carbon export to deep ocean sinks. Karen is an ARC Future Fellow.
A seaweed restoration ecologist who brings strong expertise to the team on restoration genetics and provenance, stakeholder engagement, and seaweed restoration tools.
